The population of Little Elm grew by an estimated 446% between 2000 and 2006, ballooning from 3,646 to 19,925 making the town one of the fastest growing in not only the state of Texas but also the United States .

All of this extra growth has made impacted little elm in many ways. The only problem with the city’s master plan is that they built more houses than the current road infrastructure allowed, currently the only way to get south from Little Elm is to use FM 423 which has two lanes southbound and one lane northbound. This creates a traffic nightmare on the commute back home in the afternoon. Traffic from all the houses has also affected The Colony, TX too. Since little elm was an unknown town in the 90s there was not much demand for retail. Now since all the new housing developments began there is a high demand for grocery stores and general needs items. The only big retail chain that has set foot is CVS/pharmacy which would have never considered coming to a place like little elm, but since there was a half-built Eckerds there they converted it into a CVS. The CVS in Little Elm is the busiest in its district and the number one alcohol selling CVS in the state of Texas. Since CVS arrived next door Wal-Mart has broken ground on a new 24 hour supercenter store. The area is pleasant to live in except the horrible traffic problems. The main road, Eldorado Parkway is mainly a 2-lane road and desperately needs to be expanded to a 6-lane through the city of The Colony until it connects to Highway 121
