For most of us this includes health insurance. Unfortunately, the cost of health insurance has become so high that most of us  can t do with it either. Medical products and services consumption threaten to consume 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2015. See my article  <a href="http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=sullkzbab.0.0.fqbvkrbab.0&ts=S0211&p=http%3A%2F%2Fvernbellagency.ihoststudio.com%2Fselfserve%2FArticle01.html">An Answer to Sky High Health Insurance Premiums</a> for more discussion of this trend, and one alternative our government has made available for some of us.<br><br> Fortunately, most of us can access quality health insurance coverage through our employer s group insurance plan. Those of us 65 years old or older secure coverage through Medicare, or one of the many new Medicare funded private policies, and usually some kind of supplemental coverage to bridge the Medicare gaps. Short of nationalized health care, Medicare appears to be about the best option for most of our aging population. Private individual health insurance simply becomes unaffordable as we age. <br><br> There s a growing segment of the population that doesn t qualify for Medicare and can t qualify for group coverage. An increasing number of employers have found that they can t afford to pay all or even a portion of their employees health insurance. Most have cut the percentage they pay. Some have simply stopped providing health insurance altogether. And then there are the self-employed, like me. For many of us we  discover we have a problem when our previous employer s COBRA coverage runs out. Or, perhaps our employer's generous COBRA offer is simply unaffordable.<br><br> I would love to have a nice clean answer to these problems. But, I don t. The article in the upper right of this document discusses some alternatives for the individual health insurance purchaser. Eventually, social and economic pressure will force change. What form will that change take? Your guess is as good as mine. In the meantime, consumers need to become educated on the alternatives and take time to shop for coverage that is right for them. Suddenly there s a new world to explore. There are roads to get where you want to go. But, they are all unpaved and full of pot holes.<br><br> If you don t know someone in the health insurance business, you will likely go to Google or Yahoo and simply type in  Health Insurance Quote. Google will show you results 1  10 of about 26 million hits. So, now you enter your city. OK, you re way down to 4.3 million hits. So, you pick one of the many Health Insurance Quote sites and enter your data.<br><br> I went through this process last week just to see what would happen. I got 2 phone calls within 3 minutes, another call within 20 minutes and a total of 8 phone calls in 3 days. Nine if you include me. But, since I didn t call myself, I don t count. (Sorry for the weak attempt at humor.)<br><br> What blew my mind what the callers said. Several had me pre-approved already. And, it sounded like the policy would cover all expenses for everything. One indicated that it was  very important that I call right back. Every caller was deceptive  at best. None of them offered to help work through the process of finding an insurance plan that was  right for me. And, that s what an agent is supposed to do. Frankly, I found it a bit disgusting.<br><br> So what are a health insurance shopper's options? If you re not qualified for Medicare or a group plan, it usually comes down to an individual major medical plan, an indemnity plan with limited benefits, or the state risk pool. For some, it may make sense to pick up a medical discount plan to reduce your out of pocket medical expenses. But, bear in mind discount plans are not insurance.
